Endemic to southern and northwestern Madagascar and commonly known as Baobab, Upside Down Tree, or Kapok Tree, this pachycaul is a deciduous tree with a notably thick cylindrical trunk which dramatically tapers to a point.
The lifespan is exceptionally long as specimens still growing have been carbon dated to over 400 years old. There are unusual shaving brush like flowers that open up at dusk. Like peeling the skin off a banana, the pollen begins to dehisce for the moths to pollinate.
