Bursera microphylla- Elephant Tree
A pachycaul shrub or small tree endemic to Northern Mexico and Baja California.
Bursera microphylla has super fragrant stems, fern like leaves, papery exfoliating bark, and a noticeably swollen trunk.
Also known as "elephant tree" as its trunk is thick and stout resembling the trunk and legs of an elephant.
As its swollen trunk provides excellent water storage, it is more drought tolerant than most other species in the genus.
It produces brownish purple fruit that splits open to reveal bright orange seed.
A great choice for bonsai.
