From SW Madagascar, this species is a member of the E milli complex group.
Euphorbia hofstaetteri is shrubby with a thick stemmed caudex. The branches and stems are loaded with spines. Under bright light its typical pubescent, green foliage is tinged in red. The cyathia (flowers) are a muted yellow on top and the bracts are striking, heavily veined, and reddish underneath.
